Books may well be the
single most effective means to increase knowledge.
The skill of reading brings rich dividends
proportionately to the quality of the written work
in books. Books preserve. They preserve are thoughts
and ideas, our language, our culture, our knowledge,
and our history. People who read books tend to be
more educated and maintain a broader exposure and
clearer understanding to life than those who do not
read books. Reading books helps to identify the
challenges of life and give us the tools and
background we need to gain a better grasp on the
problems of life and how to deal with them.
As books play such a
central part of our lives, perhaps a little
background on books may be appropriate here.
According to Wikipedia, in library and information
sciences a book is called a monograph, to
distinguish it from serial periodicals such as
magazines, journals or newspapers. The body of all
written works including books is literature.
There are many ways
to read a book. The most common way is how most
people read—phonetically. That is, they say each
word out in their mind as they read it. This can be
a long and tedious way to read. Therefore, many people
are turning to speed reading courses to improve
their ability to comprehend what is written, but
also to increase the amount of material they can
read without spending hours to do so.
Speed reading is a
collection of reading methods which attempt to
increase rates of reading without greatly reducing
comprehension or retention. Clearly, speed reading can generate great
dividends when it comes to reading books. |
